Sports and Eating Disorders: Understanding and Managing the Risk when Working with Athletes

This presentation will outline sport specific risk factors, lean vs. non lean sports and similarities between clients with anorexia nervosa and a well-trained athlete. Presenter will provide an understanding of specific questions to ask and assessment tools to assess clinical eating disorder behaviors in athletes. Individuals will learn signs and symptoms of unbalanced or unhealthy exercise in athletes and develop an understand of the roles of intervention and support.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to describe the role of the interdisciplinary team.

  • Participants will be able to describe how assessments for athletes differ from assessments for non-athletes.

  • Participants will be able to identify what qualifies as excessive exercise in an athlete.

You’re invited to experience the Empowered Body Expo: a celebration of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week!

Saturday, March 2nd from 2-5pm at the Wishcamper Center at USM, we’re embracing body diversity and creating a safe, positive and creative environment to explore body awareness and build self-compassion. From local resources and body-positive activities to workshops led by local professionals—this event is FREE and welcomes anyone who is committed to changing the conversation around food and body image!

Come celebrate in the public space or register for one of our workshops.
